Whisperings are the whimsical musings of Springer Spaniel Whisper, the much-loved and highly-intelligent companion of Francesca, one half of the Mel Penrose duo.
Counting down to launch, Francesca is now in regular touch with Wendy Wilson who’s publishing the novel she’s written with her former journalism colleague Mike called Lottery Loveboat. They speak on the ‘phone and I sit on Francesca’s feet under her desk in the hall so get to hear most of what’s going on.
It’s surprising what you can pick if you listen in to these sorts of conversations. Both Francesca and I are expanding our vocabulary with words such as ‘logline’ and ‘blurb’.
As a pretty literate lady myself, I call Ms Wilson the Wendy-Bird, as in J.M. Barrie’s ‘Peter Pan’. I have a feeling she might be a bit like the fictional Wendy – kind and caring but perhaps a bit bossy when she needs to be. We haven’t met her yet – the real Wendy that is – but I do know she loves Spaniels. I heard her say so the very first time she spoke to Francesca so I am already disposed to like her rather a lot and have been practising my most appealing expressions for when we do finally meet.
And, of course, her publishing house is called Whisper and her team are called the Whisperers! How about that for a coincidence! Or was it simply in the stars, somewhere near to the second on the right where Peter Pan lives?
Whatever, I’m going to bet right now that while she may have taken completely right decision to publish Mike and Francesca’s efforts, she’s going to be dead impressed by a writing Spaniel. And who knows where this partnership might take us? One thing I do know is that wherever it goes, it’s going to be ‘an awfully big adventure’.
