Striking a pose

Humans are fascinating. When I’m sitting around the farmyard or lying on the wall, you might be forgiven for thinking I’m snoozing when in truth I’m watching and listening to what’s going on around me. And I’m learning new things all the time.

For example, these past few weeks have taught me that when I see a human with a colourful mat under their arm, they will shortly start putting themselves in the most peculiar stances, standing on one leg or contorting themselves into a painful-looking stretch.

Quite often these moves are accompanied by sighs, moans and even the occasional shriek, which I found quite alarming at first. My running up to sniff or lick them wasn’t always well-received so now I just sit still, head cocked to one side and observe from a distance.

Occasionally, however, watching all that exercise makes me feel the need to stretch myself, elongate the old spine and flex a few muscles. I’m just doing what comes naturally to a dog but the admiration I get from the humans is worth making a bit of a show of it.

Honestly, I don’t get what all the fuss is about. A regular bit of up dog, down dog is really all you need to keep yourself healthy – and you won’t be catching me standing on one leg any time soon!
